Do you have a Family Emergency Plan?

By David Chisholm, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator

Does your family have an emergency plan and if so, is it up to date.  Many may ask what is a Family Emergency Plan?  At a minimum, each family should have a list of the following: Telephone numbers for out-of-State contacts, police dispatch, hospitals, family physician, relatives, work places, schools (if you have children at home).  Telephone numbers for the following may also be very helpful: insurance carrier, bank(s), credit union, credit card companies.  These are needed if wallets or purses are lost or stolen or a family member is in an accident.  In times of stress the last thing you will be able to do is think who to contact and where is their phone number.  Next your family needs to plan where to meet if you can’t stay or return to your home.  Pick a place near your home and one farther away out of the area.  Make sure that each family member knows the plan and how to quickly retrieve their 72 hour kit.  A drawing of your home with fire escapes from all parts of the home should also be part of the plan.  Preplanning and talking with all family members is essential to making the plan work for you.
